How to know if a domain is available
To know if a domain is available, check its availability. WHOIS helps, but the real confirmation comes when the registry accepts the registration.

A domain is available when the registry allows it to be registered under a specific extension.
Checking whether a website exists is not enough. A domain may be registered even if it shows no page.
How to check
The usual method is an availability search or a WHOIS lookup.
If the domain is not registered, it can usually be purchased. If it is already registered, choose another name, another extension or consider other options.
Availability can change until the registry accepts the registration.
Confusing responses
Some lookups may be unclear:
- the domain has no website but is registered;
- WHOIS does not show an owner but the domain exists;
- the registry is temporarily not responding;
- the extension has special rules;
- the name is reserved or blocked by the registry.
In these cases, confirm before treating the domain as available.
