WHOIS
What is WHOIS
WHOIS is a lookup for domain registration information. It may show status, dates, registrar and DNS servers, but personal registrant data may be protected.
Reviewed:
A lookup about a domain registration
WHOIS is used to look up public or technical information about a domain.
It is not the domain's website and not the full DNS zone. It is a query to the registry or related services that may show whether the domain exists, its status, expiry date, registrar and published DNS servers.
What it can show
Depending on the extension and registry, a WHOIS lookup may show:
- whether the domain is registered;
- creation, update and expiry dates;
- domain status;
- registrar or provider;
- DNS servers;
- some registration contacts.
Not all extensions publish the same information.
What it may not show
WHOIS does not always show the registrant's name, address, phone number or email.
For privacy, data protection or registry policy reasons, this information may be hidden, replaced by registrar data or not published at all.
That does not mean the domain has no owner. It means personal data is not publicly visible.
