What is DNS

DNS tells the Internet where the services for a domain are. It translates names such as example.com into the servers that handle web, email or other services.

Reviewed:

DNS is the domain's address book

DNS tells the Internet where each service for a domain should go.

When someone opens a domain in a browser or sends email, their computer does not directly know which server to use. It asks DNS and receives the needed instructions.

What DNS can define

A DNS zone can define:

  • which server shows the website;
  • which servers receive email;
  • which alternative names exist;
  • external service verifications;
  • email policies such as SPF or DMARC.

That is why a DNS change can affect website, email or validations.

DNS and domain are not the same

Buying a domain reserves the name. Configuring DNS tells that name how to work.

You can have a registered domain without useful DNS, or DNS managed by a different provider from the domain registrar.

How it is managed at PRIMARI.NET

At PRIMARI.NET, normal DNS configuration is done from Primary DNS.

There you can manage the domain zone and add records such as A, CNAME, MX or TXT. After saving changes, press Activate changes so they are published.

When to contact PRIMARI.NET

Contact PRIMARI.NET if you do not know who manages your DNS, if web or email do not point where expected, or if an external provider asked you for technical changes.
